Search to continue for fisherman off Qld - NEWS.com.au

The search is continuing for a fisherman who was washed overboard in rough seas off Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Authorities spent Monday scouring the water, after police received a call about 3am saying he had fallen in off Point Arkwright.

The incident occurred on the same day and less than 30 kilometres from where the body of a man believed to be an American solo sailor was found.

An abandoned yacht ran aground about 8am on Monday at Mooloolaba Beach, also on the Sunshine Coast.

The 12-metre vessel is American and an American passport was found on board.

Police will check with customs and port authorities to track the vessel's route.

Officers are also in contact with the American consulate to find the man's next of kin.

Meanwhile the search for the missing fisherman will continue at first light on Tuesday.

Superintendent Craig Hawkins said they were doing everything they could to locate him.

"The skipper of the vessel had seen him there (on the boat) before he broached a large wave, after the wave passed, the gentleman could not be found," he said.

Crew members from the trawler spotted the man in the water and threw him support equipment but he vanished soon afterwards.

Challenging conditions have hampered the search efforts, with 15 to 25-knot winds causing rough seas.
