Christina's All Day Cafe, now temporarily closed, will reopen soon in Waukesha as The Coop - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

For 34 years, Christina’s All Day Café, 350 Delafield St., has been a go-to food destination for many Waukesha residents. The popular restaurant, which closed days after Gov. Tony Evers' safer-at-home order went into effect, is expected to reopen in several weeks as The Coop under new, but familiar ownership.

Joseph Sifnaios will co-own The Coop with his brother Nicko and sister-in-law Christina, the original restaurant’s namesake.

An opportune time

“They’re happy that it’s still in the family,” said Joseph Sifnaios of feedback from patrons. “More than likely, they’re still going to see George’s smile and Peggy’s smile on a Sunday morning.”

George and Peggy Papagiannis, owners of Christina’s since 1986, briefly offered carryout orders during the coronavirus pandemic. Slow business and prior months of discussing new ownership expedited their retirement.

“When this whole scenario happened, they sat down and realized that it’s an opportune time for them to take a step back,” said Joseph. “There comes a time when you just want to take your foot off the gas and put it in cruise control.”

Christina Sifnaios and Nicko chose The Coop name as a metaphor for family. George and Peggy thought of their daughter when originally naming the restaurant and Christina thought of her kids when renaming it to The Coop.

New offerings

"A few of Christina’s crowd favorites will be returning such as the chicken dumpling soup, our famous fish fry and our biscuits and gravy," said Joseph.

He described the new menu as "home style cooking mixed with a hint of Mediterranean flavors and a touch of Latin flare."

The Coop’s menu will consist of breakfast and brunch options. The restaurant's daily hours will be from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Breakfast options include red velvet pancakes and European-style crepes. Joseph said his favorite is the Crazy Monkey crepe stuffed with fresh bananas, warm chocolate hazelnut filling and dusted with powdered sugar.

He said The Coop also has healthy options like avocado toast, multi-grain pancakes and fresh salads.

Lunch options include street tacos and a short rib sandwich, prepared with slow-braised short rib covered in homemade barbecue sauce. A variety of smoothies and cocktails will also make the menu.

A new direction

Joseph said the dinner experience isn’t as popular as it was when Christina’s first opened.

"Breakfast and brunch seems to have worked at all of the restaurants we have worked at," he said. "Now it's best that we implement the dream me and Nicko had for this place."

Nicko is the owner of the Tuscan Hall Banquet Center across the street from The Coop. Together, Nicko and Joseph have 23 years of restaurant experience.

Joseph said the aesthetics of the remodel are striving for a rustic, cozy feel that leaves patrons feeling at home.

“I think that the community has had an impact on Christina’s," he said. "We can’t explain our gratitude to the customers and staff that have made Christina’s what it is.”

Joseph said the opening date will be posted on The Coop's Facebook page.
