Chilly start in Queensland as relaxed coronavirus restrictions kick in with cold snap - ABC News

While coronavirus restrictions have been relaxed, for some Queensland residents it might be too cold to enjoy them, with temperatures across some areas in the state's south dropping below zero for the first time this year.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said temperatures at Oakey got down to -0.4 degrees Celsius and Kingaroy -0.1C.

BOM senior forecaster Sam Campbell said most of central and southern Queensland got down to single figures, including 3C at Ipswich and Charleville and 1C at Roma.

Brisbane got down to 10C and Toowoomba shivered in the morning with 6C.

The sudden change has been caused by a cold air mass from the southern oceans pushing up north, with even Cairns and Townsville getting down to 20C.

Mr Campbell said people would need to keep their woollies out for a few days yet.

"Temperatures are likely to stay below the average over the [state's] interior for the next seven days," he said.

"Temperatures around the coast will recover closer to the average by mid-next week.

"But we are going to see some cooler-than-average temperatures for most people for much of the next seven days."

The temperature in Applethorpe on the state's Granite Belt reached 4.3C at 5:30am, with an apparent temperature of -1.4C.

Down the road, Stanthorpe resident Alan Peach said locals were well prepared for the chill.

"It has been colder. It's the wind factor today," he said.

On the Gold Coast, Ben Thomson took his boat out at The Spit this morning.

"Just came in — it is too windy so it wasn't too nice out there," he said.

"It's nice to be able to go out and have a fish, but didn't catch anything.

"It has been a bit hard but it is nice now. Hopefully in a couple of weeks now we can get a bit more."

Dirk Dorren took his jet ski out at The Spit.

"The weather is not the most amazing — it is a bit cold today, but it is really good to get out there and not worry about the police or anything like that," he said.

"As soon as I heard the news I was like 'yep, got to get out there no matter what', so I got on and it is a little bit windy, but that's all right."
