Ann Marie Smith's carer identified, with criminal lawyer Stephen Ey hired - ABC News

The carer of Adelaide woman Ann Marie Smith, who died last month after allegedly being left in a cane chair 24 hours a day for more than a year, has been identified as Rosa Maione.

Ms Maione is part of a police probe into the death of Ms Smith, an NDIS participant who lived alone in Adelaide's Kensington Park and relied on a carer for all of her needs.

Ms Smith, 54, died on April 6 from severe septic shock, multi-organ failure, severe pressure sores, malnutrition and issues connected with her cerebral palsy.

On Friday, SA Police Detective Superintendent Des Bray declared her death a major crime and opened a manslaughter investigation.

In a statement on Sunday, Integrity Care SA revealed itself as the care provider for Ms Smith.

The organisation said Ms Maione had initially been suspended, but was terminated on Friday over what the organisation referred to as her "serious and wilful misconduct" following SA Police's announcement.

High-profile barrister Stephen Ey confirmed that Ms Maione, of Hectorville, was his client.

"Given the clear investigation that's taking place, which must also cover my client, at this stage we won't be making any statement pending the completion of those inquiries," Mr Ey said.

"We'll make a statement in the fullness of time, but now it is not appropriate."

When asked how Ms Maione was coping, Mr Ey said: "Difficult, clearly."

Detectives interviewed Ms Maione on Friday, searched her home and seized items for investigation.

A National Disability Insurance Scheme spokesperson said the organisation was also investigating the case, saying its "first priority" was to ensure the safety of other NDIS participants supported by Integrity Care.

Anglicare SA's chief executive Peter Sandeman also revealed his agency subcontracted work to Integrity Care SA and that Ms Maione provided care support to three of its clients.

Mr Sandeman said Anglicare was confident in the care its clients had been provided, and "regular checks by our own regular care staff and service coordinators support this".
