Australia weather update: Snow possible in Queensland as temperatures plummet - 9News

Snow as far north as Queensland is possible from today as a cold air mass originating in Antarctic waters crosses the border.

While it's not going to snow at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium tomorrow for rugby league's final and deciding State of Origin match, light snow flurries are possible over the Granite Belt region of southern Queensland during the next three days.

Forecasters say the chilly air will be accompanied by sufficient moisture for occasional light showers which could fall as snow on high ground above about 1000 metres.

The Granite Belt town of Stanthorpe, at an elevation of just over 800 metres, holds the record for Queensland's coldest recorded temperature of a bitterly cold –10.6° degrees back in June 1961, and also sees occasional snowfalls.

The heaviest snowfalls in Stanthorpe this century were on July 17, 2015, when at least 5cm covered the area.

If you are heading to Suncorp Stadium tomorrow, it'll be a cold night by Brisbane standards, with a low temperature of 9 degrees and maximums of 19 degrees expected through to Thursday.

Kick-off is at 8.05pm, at which time the apparent or "feels like" temperature should be about 12 degrees in the stands. That'll drop by a degree or two throughout the match.

Meanwhile, there has been a night of wild weather in Melbourne, with the SES responding to flood incidents across the city.

A woman was reportedly freed from her car after becoming trapped in knee-high water in Oakleigh South.

Only a few hours later, a person had to be taken to hospital in Ferny Creek after a tree fell on a house.

Early today the Bureau of Meteorology cancelled a severe weather for damaging winds in Victoria, but a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall remains for the state's central eastern district.
