The Prime Minister has condemned the alleged assault on the daughter of Animal Justice MP Andy Meddick, who backed the controversial pandemic bill, saying it was an "attack on our very democracy".
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has condemned the alleged attack on the daughter of politician Andy Meddick, who showed his support for the pandemic bill drafted by the Andrews government, saying it has "no place in Australia".
He took to Twitter a little over an hour after the news was posted onto Mr Meddick's social media page where he said the alleged assault of Kielan, 26, on a Melbourne street that "could be linked" to the legislation, "was an attack on our democracy".
"This is not on. It has no place in Australia," Mr Morrison wrote in a post on Friday, re-sharing the Animal Justice MP's statement.
"I join with all Australians in unequivocally condemning these actions. This is not just an attack on an innocent person but an attack on our very democracy.
"My thoughts - and those of all Australians - are with you Andy & your family."
Opposition leader Anthony Albanese "called on leaders around the country to condemn the attack".
"I'm so sorry," Mr Albanese commented on Mr Meddick's post.
"Violence has no place anywhere - especially not in Australian political life. I wish Kielan a speedy recovery."
Victoria's Health Minister Martin Foley said: "I'm so sorry to hear this happened. Sending my best wishes and thinking of Kielan as she recovers, as well as yourself and family."
Reason Party MP Fiona Patten said this "insanity must stop".
Mr Meddick released a statement telling followers his "worst fears" about the threats and intimidation levelled at his family over the bill "turned to reality" on Thursday night.
"Like many others I've been desperately worried about comments, threats and intimidation that have been levelled at me and my family, as well as staff and of course, my colleagues," he wrote.
"Last night, my beautiful daughter Kielan was attacked on the street. I was with her until the early hours.
"She will be OK - but it will take time.
"I have reasons to believe that this could be linked to my role as an MP and the positions I have taken on the pandemic response."
Ms Meddick was allegedly chased down Smith Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy for "being political" before a spray can was thrown at her head, causing a three centimetre cut that required stitches.
She says she ran into The 86 bar where staff members helped treat her injuries before attending hospital. She has since been discharged and is recovering at home.
Police say they are investigating the incident.
"The pair had an argument before the woman threw the spray can towards the man as she attempted to leave the scene," a police statement read.
"The man followed the woman and threw the spray can which struck her in the back of the head."
A number of other ministers have been threatened for supporting the bill, with the vote on the legislation delayed as the Andrews government tries to find one crossbench vote to win the ballot.
Premier Daniel Andrews called out the “disgusting” and “potentially criminal” behaviour from a “small ugly mob” who threatened the safety of his family.
Thousands of protesters have been demonstrating the past several weeks against the vaccine mandate and proposed pandemic bill set out by the Andrews government.
“There are some people who are threatening me, threatening my family. They are essentially attacking the safety of my family,” Mr Andrews said during a press conference on Wednesday.
“I’ll be really clear and hear this message. I will not be deterred from the work I am doing to keep every Victorian family safe. That’s the work I’ve been given to do. That’s the job we have to do.”
Mr Andrews said debate and disagreement was “fine” but the behaviour he witnessed in recent weeks was “awful”.
The Andrews government have put the handbrakes on the Victorian pandemic bill vote as they scramble to find one more minister to pass the controversial legislation in the upper house after a MP dropped a bombshell.
Former Labor powerbroker Adem Somyurek successfully applied to have his suspension lifted on Wednesday after he was banned for failing to disclose his vaccination status and indicated less than 24 hours before the ballot he would be voting against the bill.
He argued the powers would give too much authority to Premier Daniel Andrews in what was "essentially an elective dictatorship".
