WA's coronavirus hard border with Victoria to be lifted on Saturday but quarantine still required - ABC News

The WA Government plans to reclassify Victoria as "low risk" from Saturday, removing its hard border with the state and allowing travellers to head west without an exemption.

The hard border with Victoria was reintroduced last week in response to a cluster of cases linked to a hotel quarantine worker in Melbourne.

Victoria was thrown into a snap five-day lockdown as a result of the cluster, but that is now coming to an end.

From 12.01am this Saturday, Victorian travellers will be able to enter WA under strict guidelines, including that they undergo 14 days of self-quarantine and take a COVID-19 test on day 11 after their arrival.

Travellers will also need to complete a G2G pass declaration, undergo health and temperature checks and possibly take a COVID-19 test at the airport if needed.

Land arrivals at border checkpoints will need to comply with health screenings and have a G2G pass before entering 14 days of self-quarantine at a suitable premise.

Situation in Victoria 'pleasing': McGowan

WA Premier Mark McGowan said the recent developments in Victoria were good news.

"People in Victoria have endured a lot over the past year and our thoughts are with them as they continue to take a careful approach with their restrictions," he said.

"But it is pleasing they have managed to get on top of their situation quickly.

"The transition to 'low risk', which is expected on Saturday, still means people need to quarantine and undertake COVID-19 testing, however it does allow for more safe travel, and we can do this because of the controlled interstate border arrangements."

Mr McGowan said the main threat of coronavirus remained clear.

"What we witnessed with Victoria's latest situation and WA's recent outbreak is that international arrivals continue to be Australia's biggest threat of COVID-19," he said.

"We cannot and must not let our guard down, which is why I'd encourage everyone to keep up our COVID safe principles like signing in on contact registers, maintaining personal hygiene and ensuring you get tested if you have symptoms.

"These are so vital in keeping WA safe."

All other states and territories are classified by WA as "very low risk", meaning travellers can enter WA without the need to self-isolate for two weeks.

No new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in WA.
