Social distancing restrictions in NSW will ease again from Friday, February 12 unless there are "unexpected outbreaks" of COVID-19, Premier Gladys Berejiklian says.
Key points:
- NSW has recorded 17 consecutive days without locally-acquired COVID-19 infections
- The Premier will aim to relax restrictions such as the 4 square metre rule by Friday February 12
- Mask wearing will continue to be mandatory on public transport
It means venues that are currently subject to the 4 square metre rule, like restaurants, bars and places of worship, will be subject to the 2 square metre rule.
The Premier said rules around masks could be relaxed too, but that they would continue to be mandatory on public transport.
Currently, people in Greater Sydney, which includes the Blue Mountains, Wollongong and the Central Coast, must wear face coverings on public transport and in places of worship, gaming rooms, and hairdressing and beauty salons.
NSW yesterday recorded a 17th consecutive day with no locally acquired COVID-19 infections.
Almost 12,000 tests were completed in the 24 hours to 8pm yesterday.
"I'm making these comments today to provide certainty to business to make sure that people are prepared and can take advantage of that situation," Ms Berejiklian said.
"Barring any unexpected shocks or unexpected outbreaks that may occur between now and then."
Ms Berejiklian warned that some activities still cannot be undertaken until NSW Health gives the go-ahead.
"I have to stress that singing and dancing are still considered too high risk in the current environment so those activities will still not be allowed," she said.
Authorities had been concerned about lower testing in NSW over the past fortnight, but Ms Berejiklian said she was pleased with yesterday's 11,816 swabs.
