Leigh Sales, the host of the ABC’s flagship current affairs show, made a surprise appearance at Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ press conference yesterday.
The esteemed broadcaster, who is Sydney-based, was in Melbourne for a friend’s birthday when she got “caught in lockdown”. ABC’s 7:30, the program which Sales hosts, “had an interview bid for today, (Mr Andrews) said no” and attending the Premier’s update “was the next best option”, she wrote on Twitter.
As is the way at press conferences, Sales asked Mr Andrews a series of questions about the need for Victoria’s five-day lockdown and if he lacked confidence in his state’s hotel quarantine system. That is to say, as a journalist, she was doing her job.
The Premier returned the favour, and while he appeared uncomfortable at times during the exchange, still provided Sales with answers.
But one group of people weren’t happy with the press conference’s outcome: a swarm of Mr Andrews’ devoted followers – or “Dan Stans” – jumped online to swiftly savage the veteran reporter for daring to question their leader.

“I watch these every day to keep my community informed. The way you hijacked it today to get an interview that you felt entitled to was incredibly rude and disrespectful not just to those you interrogated, but to those who have to watch it to be informed,” one woman tweeted to Sales.
“This was not your show, or your interview, it was their forum to inform the public, us. And you made it incredibly uncomfortable for us to watch just so you could get your scoop or gotcha. You have a profile and a voice and you could use it to help us, but you made things worse.”
Others accused Sales of “turning a sh*tshow into a 3 ring circus”.
“So you are aware Ms Sales, thankfully our amazing Premier listens to the science and medicine to keep all Victorians safe during this COVID-19 pandemic,” another wrote.
“Always has, alway will! And not to you armchair ‘experts’!!!”
“Did you advise @DanielAndrewsMP that @abc730 would be high jacking (sic) the press conference, which is primarily held to inform Victorian public of updates to COVID restrictions and how to stay safe?” a different woman said.
“Was your ego so bruised that Andrews couldn’t accommodate your request for interview?”
One man claimed Sales only asked questions because was “taking out her anger over being stranded in Melbourne” on the Premier.
“Leigh Sales was rejecting expert health advice which the Premier is following. This is offensive to the vulnerable that need to be protected,” he tweeted.
Others were quick to point out, however, that Sales was simply doing her job.

It’s not the first time she’s experienced the wrath of the Premier’s fans: Sales was accused by Mr Andrews’ supporters last September of “cheap jibes”, after she covered the state’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic on 7:30.
“Why do you do this, Leigh, don’t you realise this confrontational manner is uncalled for and offensive to us Victorians,” one Victorian wrote to Sales on Twitter.
“Cut out the loaded questions and cheap jibes.”
Sales hit back in response, arguing it was her job to ask the tough questions.
“I view my job as asking questions that help Victorians learn about the decisions made about their lives and livelihoods, by people in power, whom Victorians elect and pay for with their tax dollars,” Sales tweeted.

Last year, Sales also shared just “a fraction of the sexualised abuse” commonly hurled at her whenever Prime Minister Scott Morrison appeared as a guest on her show.
Arguably the most respected broadcaster in Australia, the Walkley Award-winner and author was called a “rude b*tch” by one Twitter user, a “lefty POS … covorting (sic) wh*re” by another, and someone who is “in desperate need of a vibrator” by a third.
Ironically, in that sample, she was attacked for being both too soft and too hard on Mr Morrison, with one user remarking that “she pretty much sits on his lap whenever she ‘interviews’ him”.
“As I sometimes do to keep a spotlight on this, I just spent a few minutes collecting a fraction of the sexualised abuse I get every time I interview a Prime Minister,” Sales wrote at the time.
“Female politicians, journalists, public figures get this non-stop.”
