Australia has bowed to widespread international condemnation by ending its policy to detain the children of asylum seekers on a remote Pacific island. The government announced yesterday that the last four children held on Nauru would soon be resettled with their families in the US under a deal signed with the Obama administration in 2016. At its peak 200 children were detained on the island in conditions described as "cruel, inhuman and degrading" by UN officials.
