WA family stranded in South Australia’s Simpson Desert could be there for DAYS before being rescued - 7NEWS

A West Australian family stranded in remote South Australia has had supplies dropped to them as they face the prospect of being stuck in the outback for days.

The family became bogged in the Simpson Desert in their campervan about 150km north west of Oodnadatta.

Emergency services made contact with the family on Friday morning after an emergency beacon was activated.

However, due to severe weather and flood roads, the area may be inaccessible for days.

Later on Friday, a satellite phone and VHF radio were dropped to the family.

“The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is assisting SA Police in coordinating the rescue of a four-wheel-drive campervan trapped by flooded roads in remote South Australia, about 150km north west of Oodnadatta,” an AMSA spokesperson said.

“The AMSA Response Centre responded to an emergency beacon about 11.00am AEDT (on Friday) and tasked the Essendon-based Challenger rescue aircraft to the Simpson Desert location to establish communications with the vehicle.”

The AMSA spokesperson said contact with the heavily bogged campervan was made within hours of the emergency call and confirmed none of the family members have been injured.

“Coordination of the rescue has been transferred to SA Police who are preparing a ground response,” the spokesperson said.

“However due to severe wet weather, roads in the area are flooded and inaccessible for several days.”

The remoteness of the location is also hampering ground rescue efforts, the spokesperson said.

Severe weather and storms have dumped large amounts of rain on parts of South Australia in recent days.
