Cleo Smith’s alleged abductor has landed at Jandakot Airport and is on his way to Casuarina Prison — one of Perth’s toughest jails.
Terence Darrell Kelly was escorted off a Cessna 441 and onto the tarmac by four heavily-armed special operations group officers, who flew up to Carnarvon from Perth early Friday morning ahead of the transfer.
Barefoot and wearing a long-sleeved white shirt, Mr Kelly disembarked the charter plane just after 1pm before being whisked away in the back of a white van to Casuarina Prison.
PerthNow understands he will be remanded at the maximum security facility until his next court appearance in December.
The jail is home to some of WA’s worst criminals of the past 30 years, including Claremont killer Bradley Robert Edwards, the former soldier who killed Rebels boss Nick Martin, child rapist and killer Dante Arthurs, and Postcard Bandit Brenden Abbott.
A statement from the Department of Justice confirmed the officers leading the transfer were from the SOG, and would oversee both Mr Kelly’s escort and transfer from Carnarvon to Perth.
“The prisoner will be transferred to a maximum-security facility,” the statement said.
Just over two hours earlier, about 11am, the 36-year-old was loaded onto the charter plane at Carnarvon Airport.
He was seen squinting as he looked at the media scrum waiting at the airfield.
Mr Kelly arrived at Carnarvon Airport minutes earlier after being escorted from Carnarvon Police Station by the same four prison riot officers.
The 36-year-old, accused of snatching Cleo Smith from her family tent at the Blowholes campsite in the early hours of October 16, fronted Carnarvon Magistrates Court late on Thursday afternoon after more than 30 hours of interrogation by detectives.
He was charged with several crimes including one count of forcibly taking a child under 16.
Barefoot and wearing a black t-shirt during the special late-afternoon hearing, Mr Kelly shouted “I’m coming for you” at media inside the small courtroom, there to cover the alleged crime which has shocked Australia.
“What the f... are the media doing here?” he asked — a question that was answered by Magistrate Benjamin White, who replied simply: “It’s an open court.”
Mr Kelly was guarded by two police officers during the proceedings and represented by a Geraldton Aboriginal Legal Service lawyer, who appeared via video link and did not make a bail application on his behalf.
To reduce the chance of injury after two self-harming incidents while in custody saw him require medical attention, he was held in a padded cell ahead of Friday morning’s transport.
Mr Kelly, who The West Australian on Thursday revealed was an avid children’s Bratz dolls collector, was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning after Cleo was found alone inside a room in a house on Tonkin Crescent.
He was stopped in a car a short distance away before officers stormed his home and rescued the four-year-old.
Mr Kelly is due to appear at Perth Magistrates Court next month.
